MEANINGFUL CREATION

A name that defines the brand

DAIZO is built around the idea of meaningful creation. The name, also the Japanese name of founder Leonhard Daizo Bachmann, expresses the principle at the heart of the brand: creating objects with purpose, clarity and lasting value.

Conceived for those who appreciate restraint, depth and individuality, DAIZO approaches luxury eyewear as something personal and enduring. Every frame brings together design, construction and emotion in a considered balance, moving beyond the idea of eyewear as a purely functional or seasonal accessory. From proportions and materials to hardware and presentation, each element is developed with intention. The result is eyewear designed to become part of everyday life: distinctive without excess, refined without unnecessary complexity, and created to remain relevant over time.

TWO CULTURES, ONE VISION

German precision meets Japanese artistry

The identity of DAIZO is deeply connected to the German-Japanese heritage of founder Leonhard Daizo Bachmann. Born in Tokyo and later raised in the German countryside, he developed an appreciation for two complementary design cultures. Japanese artistry introduced ideas of balance, restraint and harmony between beauty and purpose, while German craftsmanship reinforced precision, durability and disciplined construction.

These influences come together throughout DAIZO eyewear, where technical rigour is softened by an intuitive approach to form. The result is a distinctive balance between strength and lightness, engineering and expression, structure and simplicity. Rather than reproducing either tradition literally, DAIZO combines them into a contemporary design language that feels precise, quiet and recognisable.

A LIFE SHAPED BY CRAFT

From tailoring to luxury design

Leonhard Daizo Bachmann’s approach to eyewear is shaped by a career rooted in craftsmanship, tailoring and luxury fashion. Trained as a tailor in Germany, he developed an early understanding of construction, materials and proportion before working within the creative environments of Tsumori Chisato, Chloé, Viktor & Rolf, Vivienne Westwood, Tom Ford and Alexander McQueen, later becoming Creative Director at R.M. Williams.

These experiences strengthened his understanding of how heritage, technical skill and contemporary design can exist together. This background is central to DAIZO, where eyewear is approached much like tailoring or architecture: proportions are carefully judged, materials are selected for both performance and character, and construction becomes part of the aesthetic itself. DAIZO translates this experience into frames defined by discipline, precision and a highly personal point of view.

THE DIAMOND SIGNATURE

A symbol rooted in family heritage

The DAIZO diamond emblem is inspired by the Nakamura family crest from the founder’s maternal lineage. The original Kamon dates back to 897 AD and was later reinterpreted as two interlinked diamonds, a geometric form that became the basis of the DAIZO monogram and logo.

This connection gives the brand’s visual identity a direct relationship with its Japanese heritage. More than a decorative mark, the emblem represents continuity, identity and meaningful creation, the same principles that guide the design of the eyewear itself. Integrated discreetly into DAIZO frames, it functions as a recognisable signature rather than an overt logo. Its precise geometry also reflects the wider language of the brand, where heritage is translated into contemporary form through proportion, restraint and attention to detail.

HANDCRAFTED IN SABAE

At the heart of Japanese eyewear craftsmanship

Every DAIZO frame is handcrafted in Fukui and Sabae, Japan, one of the world’s most respected centres of high-end eyewear manufacturing. Generations of specialist artisans have developed an exceptional understanding of frame construction, combining traditional hand skills with modern precision.

DAIZO works within this culture of expertise to create eyewear where craftsmanship can be felt in every detail, from the polish of the acetate to the fitting of individual metal components. A single frame passes through more than 250 physical processes, with more complex constructions requiring up to 300 steps. Shaping, polishing, fitting and assembly all demand specialist knowledge and close attention. The result is Japanese-made eyewear defined by patience, precision and the accumulated experience of highly skilled craftspeople.

MATERIALS WITH PURPOSE

Acetate, titanium and precision components

Material selection is central to the way DAIZO eyewear is designed and made. Acetates are specially developed for the brand in Japan and Northern Italy, both known for their expertise in premium eyewear materials. They are selected for colour, depth, tactile quality and structural performance, allowing subtle variations and dimensional effects to remain visible within the frame.

DAIZO combines acetate with pure titanium, beta titanium and stainless steel, using each material according to its structural and aesthetic qualities. Selected components may be finished in highly polished titanium, nickel or genuine 18-karat gold. Hybrid constructions bring these materials together, combining the warmth of acetate with the precision and lightness of titanium. Every material is chosen to contribute simultaneously to appearance, comfort, durability and the overall integrity of the frame.

THE HUMAN HAND

Slow processes, individual character

DAIZO follows a deliberate approach to manufacturing in which skilled craftsmanship remains central to the final result. Frames begin as raw materials and are gradually shaped through multiple specialist processes, from acetate cutting and polishing to the fitting of precision metal components. Lens development follows the same philosophy.

Artisanal lenses are created in close collaboration with specialist Japanese makers, with selected colours refined and adjusted by eye rather than through a completely standardised process. Pairs of lenses can be hand-dipped together and matched carefully to their corresponding frames, allowing colour, light and material to work in harmony. Subtle variations become part of the character of the finished object, reflecting a process shaped by both technical accuracy and human judgement rather than industrial uniformity.

BUILT TO LAST

Crafted for function and longevity

DAIZO eyewear is conceived with longevity as a fundamental part of both design and manufacturing. Proprietary hardware is developed for daily use and tested through 30,000 opening and closing cycles to preserve its integrity, balance and feel over time. Materials, construction and finishing are selected not only for their immediate appearance, but also for their ability to age gracefully through regular wear.

Production remains intentionally limited, allowing close attention to each individual frame and reinforcing the brand’s preference for considered creation over unnecessary volume. The same philosophy extends to presentation, including a vegetable-tanned, tumbled Napa leather pouch and a box handcrafted in the Japanese mountains from kiri timber. Designed to be kept rather than discarded, every element reflects DAIZO’s commitment to craftsmanship, durability and meaningful ownership.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the design philosophy behind DAIZO eyewear?

DAIZO is built on the belief in fewer, better things. Every frame is designed with purpose, focusing on proportion, material, function and character rather than unnecessary decoration. Sunglasses and optical frames are conceived as enduring everyday objects, where comfort, construction and personal expression exist in balance. This approach gives DAIZO eyewear a quiet, refined identity defined by clarity, restraint and long-term relevance.

How does DAIZO combine aesthetics and function?

At DAIZO, aesthetics and function are developed together from the beginning. Materials, hardware, proportions and structural details are considered as parts of one complete design. Influenced by Japanese Zen principles and German precision, each frame is shaped to feel visually distinctive while remaining balanced and wearable. Bevelled surfaces, controlled thicknesses and carefully resolved geometry give the eyewear an architectural quality without adding unnecessary weight or complexity.

How is comfort engineered into DAIZO frames?

Comfort is an integral part of the construction of every DAIZO frame. Ergonomically developed temples, weighted temple tips, precise hinge positioning and carefully considered bridge shapes help distribute weight and reduce pressure during wear. Material selection also plays an important role, allowing substantial designs to remain light and balanced. In hybrid constructions, acetate provides warmth and tactile depth while titanium contributes strength, precision and structural finesse.

What makes DAIZO eyewear technically distinctive?

DAIZO develops custom technical components as part of its visual identity. These include bespoke hardware, 5- and 7-barrel hinge systems, a distinctive 180-degree hinge, diamond-shaped hinge plates, asymmetric wire cores and precision titanium details. These elements are engineered to improve movement, stability, compactness and durability while giving the frames a recognisable architectural character. For DAIZO, technical innovation is most successful when it quietly improves both the performance and the design of the eyewear.
